Joanna Miller Smallwood

About/Bio

Dr. Joanna Miller Smallwood is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Sussex (UK). Joanna has a long-standing interest in nature conservation, animal rights and environmental law. Her recent book: Implementing International Environmental Law and Policy: An Interactive Approach to Environmental Regulation (Routledge, 2024) focuses on improving implementation of international environmental law. She has written on transformative governance of biodiversity, food production and consumption, tropical forests, invasive alien species and nature conservation. Her recent interests concern implementing legal and policy frameworks for the Rights of Nature in Ecuador, Colombia and the UK. Her research team were awarded the 2024 Sussex University research culture award for transdisciplinary work on the rights of the Andean bear in Ecuador. She is also interested in using ecocentric approaches in international biodiversity law for transformative governance.
