Dr. Joshua Joseph Niyo is the Regional Legal Adviser for East and Central Africa at Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. An international legal practitioner and academic, he specializes in Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law (IHL), International Human Rights Law (IHRL), and International Criminal Law. He is actively involved in a multi-year project to enhance IHL capacity in Mozambique, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan, mainly through humanitarian actors. His career encompasses roles in international NGOs such as Human Rights Watch and the ICRC, and work within the UN system, including the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Human Rights Committee. He has also served in various teaching roles in Africa, Europe and North America, including as an adjunct lecturer at UCLA, UC Irvine, and Pepperdine University, and was a Swiss National Science Foundation Visiting Researcher.
